Our lives are getting busier and busier every day, and the number of distractions while driving increases. This month’s safety tip is things to avoid while driving. When driving on the road, it is always important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, not only for your safety but also for others around you.
Texting
People are always on their phones, whether checking the latest post on social media or texting someone you are on the way. No matter what the scenario is, when driving, the text can wait. Texting while driving is one of the most common reasons people get into automobile accidents. Even if it is just one quick text, taking your attention away is dangerous. We recommend sending a “hey, I am on the way” text before getting into the vehicle or just waiting until you are parked and safe before checking your phone. Your life is worth more than a text message.
GPS
One typical instance of being distracted while driving is looking at the GPS. Whether it is on your phone or built into your vehicle, the GPS can be a distraction. The main distraction that a GPS creates is when you are setting it up. Most systems come equipped with voice commands and will read out the directions to the driver, so there is no need to look at the GPS. Here at West Omaha Auto Service, we recommend you set your route, make sure voice commands are on, and anything else you need to set up before you depart to your destination. These recommendations also apply to your music or AC system. Adjusting controls on the dashboard can be a significant distraction while driving.
Getting Ready
We have all been there. We woke up late for work, meeting a friend, or just going to an event. You are in a rush getting out the door, and you think to yourself, “it will be fine. I will just put on deodorant, lipstick, socks, shoes, ties, etc., while I am driving there.” It will not be okay. Several accidents have been caused by people being distracted while attempting to get ready while driving. If looking at your phone is a distraction, you will be distracted while putting on deodorant. We recommend either waking up earlier or, if necessary, getting ready quickly after you have reached your destination and are safely parked.
Stay safe on the roads and avoid these common distractions while driving. And remember, at West Omaha Auto Service, conveniently located at 133rd street and Gold Cir Omaha, we strive to keep our customers happy and safe to get where they are going.
